Jo Gunston, roving blogger and sport superfan

“We loved your poem. We found you a part. You’re in.”

And just like that, my Olympic dream came true. Maybe not how I’d pictured it when I was training as an elite gymnast many moons ago, nevertheless I’d made it. I was to be a dancer in the London 2012 opening ceremony. And yes, in desperation to get a part, I’d taken to writing a poem to casting because, after two auditions and just two months before the Games began, I was still a reserve. I had to get in. And I did.

I cannot tell you how amazing the night of the opening ceremony was… oh hang on, yes I can, because I post about my crazy sport life in this here blog, The Sport Life Chronicles. Gymnastics stuntwoman in a feature film? Yep. Escaped over a fence at a sports awards party? Ahuh. Had a go at ice hockey with a GB international player? Mais oui. Stayed in an igloo on a ski trip? Brrrr.

And if I don’t know what it’s like to do something, I’ll ask someone who has done it. What is it like to win two gold medals at an Olympics? I ask Mo Farah. What about attempting to run a marathon in space? Astronaut Tim Peake gives me the down low. What’s it like to be an adventure sport photographer? National Geographic photographer Jody McDonald tells me all about that. Completed an ironman despite being paralysed from the chest down? Karen Darke’s the woman for that. I figure if I’m interested in these pieces, you lot, my like-minded sport-life-loving souls, will be interested too.

I’m also a contributor to other publications, blogs and broadcasters. One of the pieces I got the best reaction from was a piece I wrote for The Sunday Times Magazine about what it was like to be in the London 2012 opening ceremony.

And that is what I love to do. Use sport life content to entertain, move people, show hope, share amazing things people do – stuff that gets lost amongst the crud. So subscribe to this here blog if you like to laugh, feel-good, think hard and beam with pleasure at the brilliant things people do.

My name’s Jo Gunston and I am a sport superfan – as weird as it is to call yourself a superfan, I don’t know how else to describe it! Follow my social media accounts below for an entertaining look at life through a sporting lens.
