An Ode To Playing Like A Girl

‘No one can make you feel inferior without your consent,’ said First Lady, wrtier and humanitarian, Eleanor Roosevelt. Couldn’t agree more.

An Ode To Playing Like A Girl
by Jo Gunston

Once too often I’ve heard the phrase
(Believe me this has happened on many a day)
‘You play like a girl’
Said with accompanying lip curl
Your reaction can play out in a number of ways.

You can storm off all huffed
Your chest out all puffed
The reaction is awaited
The lip curl abated
A smile reveals the protagonist well chuffed.

You can nod your head and agree
Hoping they see your irony
Your chain has been jerked
The lip curl now smirks
You’re now complicit in the parody.

You can silently fume
Your face red, abloom
The lip curl turns away
Flippant, they’ve had their play
Your fury you’re hoping they presume.

But there’s one other way
You can have your say
‘You play like a girl’
Said with accompanying lip curl
‘Thank you’ you say smiling, ‘you’ve made my day’.
